Glen Allen Day Since 1997 Brought to you by the Glen Allen Ruritan Club -- Glen Allen, Virginia |
Glen Allen Day 2005Parade and fairDate: Saturday, September 17, 2005 Glen Allen honors its war heroes
The unit was called up to active duty in 1950 and sent to Philadelphia because there was a threat to cities along the East Coast from air attack. They set up air defenses for two years and after that time some of the members were sent to Korea. The unit was active in Glen Allen until the 1960's when it moved to Sandston. It is now a Black Hawk helicopter squadron that will be deployed with a Marine unit to Iraq. They will have desert training Arizona starting in the fall and deploy to Iraq in January. The Glen Allen Ruritan Club cooked pork barbecue for the unit's Family Day on July 9th, and 350 members of the unit and their families attended. Also in attendance were three members of the original unit, several of whom are over 80 years old. Members of both the original unit and today's unit will be honored guests along with their families at Glen Allen Day 2005. Lets send them off to their service in a way they won't forget. This Glen Allen Day, we'll all have an excellent opportunity to let these troops and their families know how much we appreciate their roles in the war against terror. 2d Virginia Regiment to provide demonstation at Glen Allen Day
